History and Geology

CHÂTEAU LA CARDONNE is located on the highest plateau in the Médoc., on land which gently slopes towards the Gironde, embracing several geological strata, including gravel, marl and limestone. It Is these diverse sub-soils which afford the richness and complexity to our wines. The proximity of the Gironde river and Atlantic Ocean provides a uniquely warmer mesoclimate and manifests itself in early flowering and ripening, lessening risk of frost damage.

On the map drawn up by Pierre de Belleyme, the geographer of King Louis XV, La Cardonne stands out proudly, surrounded by its vineyards, and the estate has maintained a formidable reputation since the earliest vines were planted in the 17th century.

Excellence based on tradition

The very densely planted vineyard straddles the municipalities of Blaignan and Ordonnac. The vineyard is planted with 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc with an average age of 30 years. After vinification specially adjusted to suit each terroir, CHÂTEAU LA CARDONNE wines are aged for 12 months in oak barrels, after which they are bottle-aged in the chateau's spectacular underground cellar.
